The short version
Rarely does not collect anything. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The app makes no network requests, and everything it knows about you stays on your phone.
The word of the day is not fetched from a server. It is worked out from the date itself, which is why Rarely works with no connection at all — on a plane, in a tunnel, or on a phone that has never been online.
What Rarely stores on your device
| What | Why it is kept |
|---|---|
| Saved words | So your bookmarks are still there next time |
| Practice progress | Which words you have reviewed, and when each is due again |
| Streak | How many days in a row you have opened the app |
| Settings | Your reminder time, whether reminders are on, and your theme choice |
None of it is transmitted anywhere. It is not shared with the developer, and there is no server that could receive it.
What Rarely collects about you
Nothing. No name, no email address, no account, no location, no contacts, no device identifiers, no advertising ID, no usage statistics and no crash reports.
What leaves your device
Nothing that Rarely itself sends. Three things are worth naming honestly, because they involve your phone's operating system rather than the app:
- Device backups. If you use Android Auto Backup or iCloud Backup, your operating system may include Rarely's stored data in its normal backup of your phone. That is a transfer between you and Google or Apple, governed by their privacy policies rather than this one. You can exclude it in your device's backup settings.
- Sharing a word. When you tap Share, your phone's own share sheet opens and the word and its definition go to whichever app you choose. That happens only when you tap it, and Rarely is not told what you picked.
- Nothing else. No usage data, no crash reports, no identifiers of any kind.
Notifications
If you turn on the daily reminder, notifications are scheduled locally on your phone, each one already carrying its word. There is no push server and no notification token. Nothing is sent or received when a reminder arrives. Turning reminders off in Settings cancels every scheduled notification immediately.
Widgets
The home screen widgets read their word from a storage area shared between the app and the widget on your own device. That data never leaves it, and the widget makes no network requests either.
Permissions
Rarely asks you for one permission. The installed app also declares several that Android grants automatically without asking — they come from the libraries Rarely is built with, not from features it uses, and none of them carry any data.
Only if you turn on the daily reminder. You can decline, and the rest of the app works normally.
Declared by the libraries Rarely is built with. Rarely makes no network requests.
So a pending daily reminder survives a restart.
The reminder's alert.
These come from libraries pulled in alongside the notification component: Firebase Messaging, the Play install-referrer client, and a badge library. Rarely uses none of them. No push token is ever requested, and the app ships with no Firebase configuration, so the messaging service never initialises or connects.
Children
Rarely is suitable for all ages. Because it collects no data at all, it collects none from children either.
Deleting your data
Uninstalling Rarely removes everything it has stored. Settings → Reset progress clears your practice history without removing the app. Because nothing is ever sent anywhere, there is no copy elsewhere to request or delete.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published here with a new date at the top. Any change to what Rarely collects would also mean a new version of the app — and as of this one, the answer is still nothing.
